Garden Route Private Tour
5 Day 4 Night
Embark on a 5-day, 4-night Garden Route tour from Cape Town, journeying through the Western Cape province most scenic landscapes—from the coastal beauty of Hermanus and Cape Agulhas to the semi-desert charm of the Little Karoo. Travel iconic routes like Clarence Drive and Route 62, visit an African Penguin colony, explore the ancient Cango Caves, and experience Knysna’s lush forests and lagoon. Highlights include whale watching (in season), ostrich farm tours, wildlife encounters at Monkey land and Cango Ranch, and a thrilling Big Five safari in a private game reserve. With mountain passes, coastal towns, and unforgettable nature experiences, this tour is the perfect blend of adventure, wildlife, and culture.
Experience South Africa’s Most Scenic Coastal Journey
Our first destination is the coastal gem of Gordon’s Bay, where panoramic views of False Bay and Table Mountain set the tone for this unforgettable journey.
From Penguin Colonies to Mountain Passes
As we cruise along the spectacular Clarence Drive, the ocean hugs one side while mountains tower on the other. Highlights along this scenic stretch include:
- Pringle Bay – a charming seaside retreat
- Betty’s Bay – home to an endemic African Penguin colony
- Kleinmond, Vermont, and Onrus – peaceful villages framed by nature
By late morning, we reach the world-famous town of Hermanus, known as the Whale Watching Capital of South Africa.
Prime Viewing of Southern Right Whales (August–November)
Hermanus is renowned for offering some of the best land-based whale watching in the world. From the stunning Cliff Path, visitors often spot Southern Right whales breaching and playing just meters from shore. If you’re here in season, expect a truly awe-inspiring encounter with these gentle giants.
Stand at the Southernmost Tip of Africa
Leaving Hermanus, we head toward Cape Agulhas, stopping to explore the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum—a tribute to South Africa’s rich maritime history. Just 40 km beyond, we arrive at Cape Agulhas, the official southern tip of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet.
This dramatic, wind-swept landscape has claimed over 2,130 shipwrecks, earning it the name “Ship Graveyard”. Agulhas Lighthouse, the second-oldest lighthouse in South Africa.
A Historical Town in the Heart of the Overberg
Our day concludes in the charming town of Swellendam, nestled in the Overberg region. Known for its rich history, Cape Dutch architecture, and early trade heritage, Swellendam was once a key rest stop for waggoners navigating treacherous mountain passes and rivers.
Today, the town welcomes travelers with its peaceful charm, local culture, and deep connection to South Africa’s past.

The Heart of the Little Karoo
From Mountain Passes to Semi-Desert Wonders
After a hearty breakfast, our Garden Route adventure veers inland toward the captivating town of Oudtshoorn, gateway to the Little Karoo. The journey begins by tracing the foothills of the Langeberg Mountains, gradually ascending into the dramatic curves of the Tradouw Pass.
For 17 kilometres, this scenic mountain pass winds along the eastern slopes, offering dramatic viewpoints perfect for photo stops and panoramic moments. As we descend, the lush vegetation gives way to the arid, sunbaked plains of the Little Karoo, an ancient landscape rich in contrasts.
Route 62 – Scenic Drive Through the Little Karoo
Our route continues along the iconic Route 62, often described as South Africa’s answer to the USA’s Route 66. We pass through the vibrant town of Barrydale, the western entrance to the Little Karoo, known for its artsy vibe and welcoming charm.
The road weaves eastward, revealing a sweeping semi-desert plain framed by the Langeberg Mountains to the south and the towering Swartberg range to the north. Along the way, we travel through:
- Ladismith – surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards
- Zoar and Amalienstein – historic missionary settlements
- Calitzdorp – famed for its port wine and rugged beauty
By early afternoon, we arrive in the ostrich capital of the world—Oudtshoorn.
Experience Life on an Ostrich Farm
Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious Karoo-style lunch on a working ostrich farm, followed by an immersive tour. Learn about the history of the ostrich feather boom that brought wealth and fame to the region in the late 1800s. If you’re feeling brave, you may even have the rare opportunity to ride one of these magnificent birds—a truly unforgettable experience!
Oudtshoorn’s fascinating blend of ostrich culture, rural life, and historic flair offers insight into a world shaped by feathers, fortunes, and frontier spirit.
Explore the Otherworldly Cango Caves
Next, we venture into the awe-inspiring Cango Caves, one of South Africa’s oldest tourist attractions. Discovered in 1792, these ancient limestone caverns are filled with towering stalactites and stalagmites, dramatic chambers, and echoing beauty.
Only Cango One, the main chamber system, is open to visitors, but it’s more than enough to leave you breathless. Inside, the temperature hovers around 18°C, and the humidity brings the rock formations to life in shimmering detail.
Return to Oudtshoorn
After the magical experience inside the caves, we return to Oudtshoorn, where your evening is free to relax, reflect, and soak up the peaceful charm of the Little Karoo.
